Mrs Watson Leaves - Good Luck, We'll Miss You!

The end of the year, also marks the end of an era.  Mrs. Watson who has been at the school since the very beginning has left to become mummy of twins.  Thanks for everything Mrs Watson and enjoy you're next adventures!  Lots of love - everyone here in Year 5!

Year 6 Football Tournaments

The Year Six Fooball Team (featuring two of our Year 5s) has had a very good term, which finished with two very strong performances in the Tournaments at DESS and at JAPS

As part of the the team, both Mark 5HF and Patrick of 5IM.

We remained unbeaten in both tournaments, and didn't concede a single goal.

The DESS Festive Football Tournament
On Thursday 9th December 2010, our results were:

Kings 0 - 0 DESS Red
(Close game, both teams played well.)
Kings 0 - 0 JESS Ranches Kings
(Kings clearly stronger, we should have put away some of our chances)
BSAK 0 - 0 Kings
(The opposition were from Abu Dhabi and the eventual winners of the tournament, but again we should have beaten them, we were the better team)
RDS 0 - 1 Kings
(We finally scored, and dominated)
Horizon 0 - 0 Kings
(We bombarded their goal, played excellently, but the goal keeper was awsome!)

We were unlucky not to get to the semis, as no team came close to beating us.  So we decided to be more attacking.  The eventual winners were Wellington International, who we had beaten 3-1 in the league!
The final was BSAK 1-2 Wellington

The Sony Dubai Schools'Year 6 League Grand Final Day
JAPS - December 14th 2010, our results were:

Jess Ranches 0 - 1 Kings
(Great performance, deserved win)
Kings 0 - EIS Jumerirah
(Really frustrating, we were so much stronger and should have won handsomely)
DBS 0 - 0 Kings
(A close game against the only team to beat us all season, a draw a fair outcome)
Kings 1 - 0 JPS
(A solid performance by us, things were looking good!)
RDS 0 - 0 kings
(Really disappointed not to win, we beat them last time!)

Because of limited time, there were no semi-finals.  I (Mr McGarry had got my maths wrong, and had thought we were through to the final, unforatunately, JPS beat us by one point, even though we had beaten them in our match.  JPS's players came over and shook our hands and were great sports.
The final was JPS 0 - 2 Repton

Well done Kings Year 6 Team.  We were extremely unlucky not to have some silverware at the end of the season. But we're so proud of you.

Year 5 Football - The Wellington International Match - Nov 11th

Match Report
Today, Kings' Dubai played a amazing match against Wellington!
It started with Wellington taking kick-off, but straight away Kings' strikers (Shakir & Marc) took control of the ball and passed it to the winger (Patrick)  and the players kept on passing and moving up the field, but the Wellington defenders tackled us before we could shoot. We were playing brilliantly with our defence (Jack P & William) but we also had a few good shots. During the first half Patrick ran up  the wing and crossed it in on the ground and Ben W had a shot but the goalie had his whole body behind the ball and saved it! The half time whistle blew so we got our drinks and Mr. Donaghey called us over for a chat about the first half.
We had kick-off and we started passing and running up the field. Ben W had a brilliant shot but the goalie dived out as far as he could and caught the ball but struggled a bit to hold it. Finlay ran up the wing amazingly skilling everyone, passed to Patrick, Patrick flicked the ball behind him and had a very powerful shot at goals but the keeper saved it again using his body to stop the ball from going into the net....but then the goalie dropped the ball and Ben ran into the box and chipped it over the keeper and into the back of the net, 1 - 0 to Kings'!
Wellington took kick-off very quickly and started passing the ball up the pitch. As quick as a flash a Wellington winger was in the box and had a powerful shot at the near post that just slipped past Keanu's arm and flew into the net . 1 all!
The equaliser only made Kings even more determined to score a winning goal. With only 7 minutes left on the clock. A strong ball came from Elliot in defence to Patrick who dribbled it to the edge of the box to make a strike at goals. The ball bounced off the keepers stomach and landed in front of Ben W who had another shot which the brave keeper attempted to save again but sadly for him it rolled out in front of him but Cameron saved the day and smashed the ball high into the roof of the net. 2-1 A Great game!

Alma in the Maldives - 18th November

Hi!

Its Alma and I'm in Maldives!
I am having a great time here with my sister, brother and parents. Today (18/11/10) has been an extremely cloudy, windy and rainy day unlike the picture shown above.
Not including today (and a few other days) it has been very good weather here. Even though it has been sunny it has also been a lot of big big waves and choppy seas. This kind of sea is perfect for the banana boat! My family (not including my mum) has been on the banana boat and belive me it was fun! I know my dad loved it since he was smiling all the way. My brother didn't enjoy it as much as me and my sister did because he was on the boat for half the ride.

Only a few days ago my parents and me had a surprise for my sis and bro. The surprise was that three of my parents and our friends were going to share our holiday with us.
When we were going to pick them up from the reception area we tricked my little sis and bro to think that we were going to feed the sharks. I belive they must of thought this was weird since these were one of the days when it was windy, cloudy and rainy, plus it was late. Surprisingly they went along with it. When our guests arived Ebba and Eddie (my sister and brother) were really happy. Ebba knew there was a surprise but they just didn't know what it was.
I'm glad we kept it a surprise since their faces proved very well they were surprised.

I really enjoy it here in Maldives.  I hope you enjoy you Eid break to!  Holiday wishes from Alma

Football Report - 7th November 2010

Today, Kings' Dubai football team played Dubai British School at Jebel Ali.
In the first half we were playing brilliantly. We saved a few shots and we had a few shots! The first shot at goal was from DBS, the DBS winger ran up the wing and ran in towards the box, he shot the ball aiming to smack it into the top of the net but Keanu, our keeper, jumped up and amazingly caught the shot!
Our first shot at goal was when Shakir got the ball and started to dribble down the line. He started to move towards the box and tried to pass it to me but the DBS defender just managed to tackle Shakir before he could pass the ball. The next shot was by DBS again, they ran up the wing and belted it at the near post but the DBS player kicked it too far near to the post and it hit it with a big 'clang!'
The next shot after that was by me. Shakir passed the ball to me and I ran and had a shot inside the box but the goalkeeper dived out and caught the ball...but then it slipped out of his hands and I did a little kick forward but the defender booted the ball up the field! Just after this the half time whistle blew.
We all had drinks of water and listened to Mr Donaghy's half time talk. In the second half, Marc, William and Finn came on to give some of the players a rest. Each team had a few shorts but no one managed to score as both keepers were playing very well. Kings had a chance to score when Jack P took a free kick that hit the wall. Late in the second half DBS had a throw in just over the half way line, it went to the DBS striker who ran up the wing and cut inside the box. He shot and Keanu got his hands to the ball but it was going too fast for him and it hit the roof of the net - one nil to DBS!
Kings' tried really hard to score an equaliser, but unfortunatelky today was not our day and the referee blew the whistle before we could equalise. It was a very close game and we were very unlucky to lose.
So far it has been a victory, a draw and a loss but I am sure we are going to win our next match!

DIA 0 - 1 Kings
Jebel Ali 2 - 2 Kings
DBS 1 - 0 Kings

Todays team was:
Keanu
Patrick
Jack P
Finn B
Marc
Shakir
Ben W
Cameron
William W
Elliot

Space News

In our Year 5 theme of 'Inside and Outside the Solar System, two stories have caught the eye of pupils I've spoken to.
Inside the Solar System - SILVER ON THE MOON

Cabeus Crater (Science/AAAS)
Craters of the Moon

Last year, NASA purposely crashed a rocket into the moon's surface to test what was below.  Not only were small amounts of the precious metal silver found, but also huge pockets of water in ice form.  This water would be very helpful for future plans of a permanent research centre on the moon.
How did it get there?
Read http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11598813 for more details.

Outside the Solar System - In a galaxy, far far away...

Using the extremely powerful Hubble Space Telescope, a galaxy has been located (no, not the chocolate), which is now the most distant object(s) in the universe (from us in the Milky Way - no, not the chocolate!)

File:Hubble 01.jpg
The Hubble Space Telescope above Earth.

This galaxy is called UDFy-38135539, and is so far away, that even if we could travel at light speed (which we can't) it would still take you 13,000,000,000 years to get there - and probably it would be gone by the time you arrived!  In fact - it might not even exist anymore, because the light that the telescope detected took 13 billion light years to arrive!  Read more at:

Inside the Solar System - LIFE ON MARS?

Finally, today I was asked about life on other planets.  One possibility is life on Mars (no, not the chocolate - will you stop thinking about chocolate!)  NASA plan to send another 'rover' to search for signs of 'microbial' life.

Artist's impression of the new rover.

The rover is like a very expensive and clever remote control car.  This mission will help figure out if Mars has or had the right conditions to support basic life forms (like bacteria or plant life).  It is very, very, very (oh, and did I mention 'very') unlikely the rover will stumble upon the cartoon-like version of Martians you see on TV and in the movies!

If you find any interesting news items or links - email the blog at the usual address.  Right, I'm off for a cup of tea and a Kit Kat (yes, the chocolate!) - Mr. McG

Halloween Rap

October - Halloween Month - 5IM's Little Monsters

Moon Log Project.

Year 5 - As part of your homework for the next four weeks (or 27.8 days to be exact) you have been asked to keep a log of the moon, make comments about what you observe, and make sketches of the waxing and waning of the lunar cycle.

FAQs
What happens if I can't see the moon in the evening?
If you observe cloud coverage, record that - OR - you can quite often see the moon in the morning and make a quick sketch and notes then - make a judgement - your choice.

Does it have to be in our homework books?
Not necessarily.  I have said to 5IM, you can keep a log, note book, make a poster, make a PowerPoint, take digital photos - it's up to you - use your imaginations.

Can I use the internet to help me research?
Absolutely - but don't turn your homework into a cut a paste fest!  Read, select and paraphrase (use you own words)

Can my parents do it for me?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

When it it due?
In one lunar month.

Good luck! (Mr. McGarry)
